Stringer material

I am building stringers right now I I noticed that what I thought were 2x10's were actually 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood... Should I cut plywood to match or can I use a 2x10 cut to size and replace them? I have some pressure treated 2x's already dried out and ready to go but now I have question marks floating around in my head....

Help!

Re: Stringer material

From what I've read on here, I would use whichever you have on hand, especially if you are glassing it in.

While it may not be the answer you'd like, the two pieces of 3/4'' plywood is MUCH stronger than the dimensional 2x10. I'm not quite saying you can't use the 2x10s, I'm not a total expert on this, but it's true that it will be a lot stronger and that's also what your boat was designed to have.

F14 is correct.. and ply takes glass a lot better then dimensional..

but its your boat.. your choice!

Whatever you choose, it will be better than what was there, and if it's glassed in properly, won't matter whether it's ply or dimensional. Use what you have on hand, and put one extra layer of glass on it for good measure. It'll work great.

Thanks guys...
I had already cut the dimensional wood to fit already... I think after all the work in getting the floor profile cut into the wood it will just be easier for me to put some extra glass over it.

I know it will be a lot stronger than what was there... I could pick it up without breaking into 4 pieces. Only 1 kept its form even though it was rotted all the way through.

Make sure you bed the wood in something before glassing them down. I used thickened epoxy on mine (some people call it peanut butter which reflects on the consistency you want to achieve), others use PL premium construction adhesive. I prefer my stringers permanently attached.
