Again, 1973 OMC Stringer attached to a 3.0 140HP 4 cylinder engine.

The upper chamber on the outdrive leg has a top plug and a drain plug.
In the manual the photo shows the upper one having a dipstick.
Mine does not have the dipstick.

How much fluid should there be in that resevoir?
I am assuming that overfilling is not a good thing. Once it warms up, it will expand.
So, at what level should the oil be?

Similarly, the intermdiate housing has a fill plug but I do not see a drain plug.

Is there one?

How high should the oil level be in the IH?

I just pushed a hose into the fill plug and filled it until it ran out. Do I have too much oil in it?

Randy who is about to put this old boat in the water and see if it moves under its own power

Re: Stringer outdrive leg Qs

You fill the intermediate housing right up to the plug opening. I assume that you electric shift upper must have had a dip stick on the big plug because you do not want to overfill it. Maybe someone with an electric shift drive can pull their plug and measure the dipstick. They may be the same as the Hydro Mech dipstick but I do not know for sure PLUS my drive is tilted up with the battery out of the boat, so I can't check it right now.
