Re: Stringer outdrive

It sounds like a bad shift cable

Re: Stringer outdrive

did the engine start overheating after propulsion was lost? pump shaft usually makes some grinding but maybe yours broke clean.

Re: Stringer outdrive

It was starting to get warm but I did not let it just run

my money is on failed shaft. and yes, its a PITA. I have repaired two to date. one being mine, and one being a friends (after he let me learn on mine)

I picked up new shafts from a small company in Illinois that was founded by former OMC machinists. not sure if they are still in business.

A stripped water pump shaft will not cause the drive to 'pop' out of gear. I would disconnect your shift cable from the shift converter and see what happens when you manually shift it from forward/neutral/reverse. It may be that your shift converter/throttle cable are out of adjustment.

Boomyal so if I was pulling a tube and then it Pop out of gear

I suppose that striped waterpump shaft splines could suddenly 'pop' and let loose. It would usually continue to make noise as the striped splines rotated past each other. If that were the case, it would never hook back up (even though the lower unit may be shifting properly).

Remove the prop and make sure it's not a failed propeller hub, but 1982 is not electric shift and if it started to overheat after propulsion was lost, your water pump shaft has most likely failed.
Get a factory manual from outboardbooks.com or ebay and follow the process to remove the outdrive and then take the upper gearcase out. Remove the battery from the boat before disconnecting any shift cables.
The impeller housing and shaft come out of the upper after it is on a work bench.
It will be good practice as you'll need to do that every 2 to 5 years or so to replace your raw water impeller and grease the splines so the shaft doesn't fail again. more like 2 years on a moored boat and 5 on a trailered boat.
Castrol Pyroplex Blue or similar waterproof grease will stick in those splines better than cheap stuff.

Re: Stringer outdrive

sounds like a water pump shaft spine. If it is you will have to change both water pump shaft and bearing housing shaft.

Just did it in record time 2 weeks ago. shafts on ebay both for $145 free shipping + you upper and lower seal kits and water pump housing kit. you in to it around $300 + the grease and oil.

Ill be here
