Stringer Question

My bolts that are mounted into my stringer that control my steering are very loose. I noticed I had a lot of play in my steering wheel and after some examining, I found the loose bolts. What is the best way to tighten them up? I have been told to put a couple of shims in the holes and then add epoxy which should provide a temporary fix to my problem. Any suggestions on which epoxy to use or any other way to tighten the bolts without taking the boat out and replacing the stringers?

Re: Stringer Question

Why are they loose? Are they sunk into rotten or wet wood?

If that's the case, your stringers might need replacement.

Re: Stringer Question

The stringer appears to be wet. I am heading up tonight to try to fix the problem but wanted to hear other suggestions first

Re: Stringer Question

You need to get it dry first. Then epoxy and sawdust, or toothpicks, or shims, or...... will work to fill the holes. Then redrill/reset your bolts. Then just be gentle for the rest of the season and tear it all out this fall.
