can anyone give me an approx. price to repair a bad stinger in 87 thompson sportsman, deck is soft up toward the cuddy cabin, and by looking at the hull stinger looks bad where the boat sits on the trailer runner not sure if the whole stringer is bad or not, whats the cost to repair from the cabin, back.probably wouldn't do the work myself, but what would the cost difference be. thanks

Re: stringer repair cost

JefferyC13,

Just noticed my last post was completely useless! Sorry.

My guess would be that if the deck is soft it will need to be replaced, If one stringer looks bad from the outside is is highly probable that you have more than 1 bad stringer. You may need to take a look at the transom as well. Check for a brown "syrup" comming out of any mounting holes.

So, parts wise you will be looking at deck plywood probably at least two sheets, stringer wood, probably more than 1, glass, resin (epoxy more expensive) at least a couple of Gallons. If the transom is bad, transom plywood.

My guess is (at least around here) $30 sheet for deck, $45 sheet for transom, not sure about your stringers figure about $1.25 per board foot. Expoxy resin about $95 per gallon.

So just a guess:
3 sheets deck $90
2 sheets transom $90
2-3 Gallons Resin $200-300 (roughly)
40 board feet for stringers (more than 1) $50
Glass (probably) another $100, for stringers about $9 per yard for deck about $5 per yard.

Total: $630 Materials
Labor: $30-60 per hour, can't really estimate number of hours. SWAG=40hrs, using $50/hr = $2,000

Soooo. Lets say the total job is around $3,000.

This is a REALLY big guess!!!!, without getting an estimate and really taking a close look at what needs to be replaced.

Thats about the best I can do, maybe someone else has a better idea.

Again sorry for the last post.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Re: stringer repair cost

Spent $3,000.00 having the transom redone on my 23' (which included removal & reinstallation of 2 engines). Used a glass sandwich instead of plywood. Would have run about $2,200.00 with plywood. Guy did a fabulous job. Stringers were OK.

The transom is a much bigger job to do right than most people think. Floor and stringer repair are a pain but fairly dooable. There is plenty of info on this site on how to do both.
