Stringer shift cables R/R

Can anyone tell me how to take the cables loose on an OMC model #983489, serial #386475, I'm trying to remove the outdrive and I ain't sure which end to take the cables loose, or how to get to the ones down in the drive. Do I need to split the top from the bottom or what is the procedure? Any help as always is appreciated, Thanks..

Not sure on the model # but at the back of the engine on the intermediate drive do you have a shift control box? it'll have a cable from the driver control coming in to the top connected to an arm on top of that plate and another cable coming out the back top right corner.

If you are handy and careful you can take the converter apart. First there are 2 spring loaded arms on the back where the rubber cable goes in. And there is a small hole on the top of that section. You need to take a small screwdriver or similar and pry the arms up and push in on the rubber housing and while holding that in you will insert a cotter pin (should be one on a piece of wire hanging there) down in to the hole and all the way through. This holds the spring in place that tensions the cables.

Recommend you take pictures as you go so you will be able to reassemble.

Then take the arm off and then the big screws. Now you can see inside the converter. The top cable is supposed to go across the top and over the pulley and back to the quadrant. The lower cable just goes to the left as you look at it (starboard) side of the quadrant. If these get crossed they were put together that way (wrong). Now you can pull on hte cables one at a time and see if they are hard to pull. If so you will need a new cable and the drive removed and taken apart to install it. New cable may not be available, you may have to look for a used drive. Drives have different gear ratios so it is important to get one that is for the engine you have i.e. 4 cyl, V-6, V-8.

Raise the drive all the way and remove the small bolt and clip that holds the cable to the transom plate.

take the battery out of the boat first.

There are about ten live bare 12V terminals on various relays right around where the bare cables will be.
Touch one and your $600 cable goes up in smoke.
