I have a stringer 800 mechanical shift sterndrive that was rebuilt three years ago_One day the sterndrive quit pumping water.I replaced the impellor and housing, reinstalled the drive and it still doesn't pump water.Does anyone have any suggestions for me?Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.

How and under what circumstances are you testing it?

Re: stringer water circulation

My boat sits on a trailer. My co-owner and I usually drop the stern drive into a 35 gallon bucket. It normally pumps plenty of water. One day I went to start it up and it decided to quit pumping water.I changed the impellor and housing and it still doesn't pump.I pulled the hose that supply's the water to the thermostat housing to see if water was making it to that point, but it wasn't.Any suggestions or ideas wouldbe greatly appreciated.

What did the original impeller look like when you removed it? What was the condition of the housing?

Neither one of them looked to bad. There was a small amount of some kind of white stuff in in the housing and on the impellor. Some of it was dried up, some was like a gel.The impellor was still in one piece.

I've never run one in a barrel. Can you try removing the supply hose to the thermostat with the boat sitting in the water? It is very odd that you get nothing out of the supply hose. Air leaks can cause bubble but you still get water and being as your impeller was intact it is unlikely that any water passages would be blocked.

At first I thought the water pickup tube wasn't quite submerged in water. The boat lives on a trailer at my partners house.Sometimes the trailer is attached to a truck, sometimes it's not.Changing the angle of the sterndrive.I've made sure the water inlet holes on the side of drive were at least an inch in the water.Would muff's make a difference? We tried the muffs previously, but we weren't to sure how affective they were.
