Re: striper fishing setup....

This depends on how you want to fish for them.Off of Montauk you can fish a few different ways depending on what time of year it is.I have two set ups that I use.The first is with wire line for trolling with parachutes.Penn senator4 reel with a senator pole. You dont need the senator pole but I got a great deal so I bought the set up.You can use a penn long beach rod they are fine for bass and very in expensive saw it yesterday in sports authority for 24.95.The mono set up I use is a penn surfmaster reel with a penn powerstick. The 209 should be fine but if you plan on catching big bass I would concider a senator.I just bought another one to replace the surfmaster. There were a lot of fish over 50lbs. caught this year around here and I would rather be safe then sorry. If they dont get this big where you fish then the set up youre looking at will be fine.Good luck with the bass there a lot of fun.Jonny

Freshwater? Get abu Garcia 6500C with 20# big game line and go at it.

Troll big spinnerbaits or minnow type crank baits and kill them.

If they are working the surface, throw some big topwater baits at them and hold on.

K5Ranger
Really depends on how you are fishing.
Anchored bait fishing I perfer a mid size spinning reel and a balance pole. Line weight 14 to 20 pound is fine. Lots of people here use a Shimano Baitrunner with the dual drag system. Lots of people use then for fishing with shad, sardines or bullheads. I use 17 lb test but a thin line like Trilene XL or Stren Magnathin. Useing a super fat line like Big game just means a lot more water drag an as a result you must use bigger weight to hold the bottom. Bigger weights means you need a heavier rod, slower hook sets and the fish more likely to drop the bait. I caught over 70 stripers in one season and did not loose a single fish from line breakage. Biggest was 39lb 7 oz. I set my drag at 5lb with the rod at 90 degrees to the line pull.
I use same rig casting surface plugs or free lining live bait on the surface.

Trolling, drift fishing then I like a Abu 6500C3 or any of the 6500 size. The casting reel is just eaiser to let out a little line to stay in contact with the bottom. A Penn 209 would be ok but the 6500 more fun. The 209 weight is 19.5 oz and retreive speed is 3.1 to 1, and it has no ball bearings. The ABU 6500C3 Weight is 10.5 oz it has a retreive speed of 5.3 to 1 and it has two ball bearings and 1 roller bearing. For line here I use 30 lb test spectra, about the diameter of 14 lb mono. Some use as high as 50 lb spectra. Reason for heavy line for trolling is not for fish landing, it to give you a better chance of getting your lure back when snagged. I use a 25 to 30 lb leader and a 10 lb weight leader. In real clear water I use a florcarbon leader.
Good Luck

For guys lookng for a great striper combo, Boaters World has some good deals. I purchased a 7'0 spinning rod combo with the new Penn Captiva Live Liner for $85.00. You cant beat it. The reel itself list for $75 at most stores and online. The reel is the CLL6000 and the rod I believe is Boaters Worlds brand Outer Banks.

I fish fresh water also, lakes/rivers, I use a penn 29, on a 7' Ugly stick. I have boated catfish and stripers up to 30lb with no problem. I use to use a penn 209 with 12' surf rods but decided to go with smaller size and have not regretted. I live in Columbia , home of shakespear, they have a yard sale here every spring and sell all of their products at reduced prices, Last year I bought some SK 4000S reels and 7' ugly stick combos for 25.00 each. They have worked out realy well. The only problem is that they only hold about 150 yds of 20lb. I have never had a fish run out most of the line but you never know. Good luck with whatever you decide to get.
