Stripped bolt

Just recently replaced my head gaskets. Solved my cooling issues, excited about that, but in the process of torquing down the bolts, one would not torque to the appropriate value, just keeps spinning. My question is I want to replace the bolt. Question 1. Have I messed up the head gasket. No leaks but do not want to leave it unattended. Question 2 if I pull this bolt, should I undo all of the bolts, remove, install new one and retorque, or can I just remove this bolt, install new one and retorque to correct spec. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Stripped bolt

until you have removed the one bolt thats spinning then you wil not know if the bolt is stripped or the hole. If its the bolt then just put a new one in and tourqe it but if the hole is stripped then it depends on which hole as the head may have to be removed to install a heli-coil

Re: Stripped bolt

It is a stainless steel bolt, so doubt it's the bolt. Just read several threads on this. Looms like I'm going to go with a helicoil. If I can't, guess this will give me a reason to buy a new engine. Most say it's a paper weight if the hole can't be fixed. Summer is too close. Not very happy about the whole thing. Thanks for the advise gpop.

Why a paperwieght for a stripped hole? Coil it or drill and tap to oversize bolt. Shouldnt be a problem if its a good running motor.

BELIEVE ME when I say this. A single stripped bolt will not be an issue. Down here in Florida (because of salt water etc..) stripped head bolts are very common. In fact, I once had 14 of 25 water jacket bolts shear off in an old Mercury Motor of mine. However, a heli coil should fix you right up.

Re: Stripped bolt

Try adding 2 washers first then see if it will torque if that dont work try course thread bolt the washer trick may work and somtimes if it has fine threads course will tightin up
