Stripped Paint From OB Tilt Actuator

when I was cleaning my boat last fall I was using Starbrite EZ-on EZ-off. I believe I have stripped the paint from my tilt actuator and pump. I doubt just sitting in freshwater would do this? I assume I need to repaint this but need to know what I should use. Can I just use the standard Mercury phantom black motor paint? The boat is a 2017 with a mercury 150. The paint on the motor mount seems to be untouched by the cleaner. I run my boat 100% in freshwater but it is in the water for 2 straight months before I take it out typically. Any help is greatly appreciated.

From the look at the picture, it does appear to be from the water. And the reason why that paint is gone and not the motor itself is because the motor uses a two part paint that is a lot tougher then the type paint the pump manufacture used.

With that stated, you can use any black paint with a catalysis hardener to repaint it. But I would first sand the unit, prime it and then paint the pump. And you can use some Rustoleum paint with some Magic catalysis added to make it very tough and resist scratching, fading and peeling. JMHO

Do you think there would be any issues if it’s left unpainted? I assume this is aluminium so I will need a special primer? I consider my self to be pretty handy in many areas, but paint is not one of them. I appreciate the help.

Self etching primer is cheap. You can use Rustoleum Oil Based Paint and Acrylic Hardener and paint the whole thing for under 50 bucks. You can even use a PreVal Sprayer to do the job.

Ok, Thanks for the help. Would there be harm to use it as is for the time being?

I ended up priming with self etching then painted with rustoleum. Seems to have worked out ok.
