Stripped threads

I have an early 80's Johnson 70hp 3cyl outboard.

I was taking the lower unit off to change the water pump impeller and I got all the bolts out except the 5/8 recessed bolt forward of the trim tab. This bolt seems to be have stripped threads. It will spin both clockwise and counter clockwise, but will not advance in or out. Does anyone have suggestions on how to free it?

The bolts I removed successfully were very difficult to remove and had some corrosion.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Stripped threads

If you can, try to get a screw driver or something under the head to give it some up presure. Then try to turn it out.

Since all the other bolts are out, try pulling the lower unit. This will put pressure on the bolt head to help unscrew it. You are going to need to Heli-coil it anyway.

The screwdriver trick worked like a charm. It was broken about 1/2 inch up the threads. Of course the lower unit still doesn't budge, but I didn't try too hard because it was almost dark. I'll try to finish it up tomorrow.

Make sure the other, smaller bolt under the trim plate is out.

It was that smaller bolt under the trim plate. It came right off after I took that out... I bet you can tell I'm a boat motor n00b.
