Structure question

Hey guys -
Its been awhile since I have been on here. I am making some changes to my boat, a 16' Holiday, and had a question. I am thinking about taking out the inside wall and shelf to leave the side of the boat exposed. I am wanting to mount some rod holders on the side. Would this make the side of the boat weaker? Would this be a bad idea? I hope I was clear enough.

Thank you,
David

Re: Structure question

The sides get most of their strength from the coaming but I removed the shelves on my 18' and the sides we're a little to flimsy for my comfort. I put them back in and put the rod holders above them. I put a toe kick in from the outer edge of the shelf and tied it into the deck. That took all of the flex out of sides and I got my rod holders too.

Re: Structure question

Thanks foe the response. I should have clarified it some more, I am wanting to put horizontal rod holders for trailering and driving around.

Re: Structure question

sschefer, if you have time could you please post a pic of your boat and rod holders. I would appreciate it. i am looking for some fresh ideas.

Also, was concerned the removing the bow on my 1974 holiday may be a bad idea, but has anyone put extra bracing under the bow, and put a non-slip rubber material up top with a lean-on style seat for trolling?
