struggling for high speed

I have an 85 Evinrude that "stuggles" when you give it the throttle. It will try to take off, and sometimes if you leave it full throttle, it will eventually "kick in" and go. It runs fine then. Seems to be an intermitint problem. I put in carb kits last year to take care of a leaking bowl gasket.
Any clues as to what I might need to check next?

Re: struggling for high speed

sounds like you may have some stuff in a high speed jet still. When it struggles have someone with insulated pliers pull the plug wires one at a time and see if the rpms change. If they don't then you are losing fire to that cylinder.

Re: struggling for high speed

so are you saying that it might not be firing under a load? If I find a cylynder not firing, would that be a coil or power pack issue?

I have a 1983 75HP evinrude that does the same thing. I found that if I tap the choke, it gets over the "hump" and goes full throttle. I rebuilt the carbs twice and the problem still occurs occasionally. Now I just live with it.

Well if anyone finds the answer, I have a 1983 Evinrude 150 V6 that is doing the same thing... I just wonder if it has to do with these screwy spark plugs that have no "L" on the ends.

Re: struggling for high speed

Ragin Cajun, surface gaps shouldn't cause that problem, but the transfer of fuel during that particular transition point can affect the midrange performance...it could even be a timing issue.
You may have one or more intermiediate jets plugged..

crski we need to eliminate one thing at a time. Let's make sure that you are getting spark under a load then we can look at fuel.

Hi.
I had the same problem with a 60hp 2 stroke. The engine would idle very nice b ut as soon as i needed power it would go for just a few seconds then jump back then go again and so on and so on.

I had the engine looked at and it seemed that the timing was of by just 5 degrees. Once the timing was set it went like a bomb

Re: struggling for high speed

Well, I did find the positive battery cable corroded on the inside because the engine was getting hard to crank. I measured the voltage at the solenoid and found it dropping quite a bit. I replaced the cable and it cranks almost immediately...much improved. Would that cause a drop in voltage to the power pack thus creating a low spark?

How do you set the timing? I'm heading for the lake tommorrow and will be oout of touch for a while getting some R an R.

Re: struggling for high speed

Once it is running any variation in voltage can fry your pack. Chances are decent that it might be okay, I hope so. If you want to set the timing go to the link n sync portion of your manual first and follow the instructions to the letter. Hope your R&R is really rest and relaxation other than really frusrating and really no fun. Get rid of the wing nuts, clean the terminal well, and put a hex nut on there and tighten it down.

Thanks Fireman57...I am leaving today for the lake. I will follow your advice on the battery terminals. Will let you know how things turn out in about a week.
