I can't clean the stubborn, fresh water residue from the hull of my twenty year old fiberglass boat. I've tried abrasive cleaners, household cleaners, and various store bought cleaners. I'm thinking it may need to be repainted. If anyone knows of any product please forward it on before I take that step. Thanks.

I had the same problem with one of my boats. I wet sanded with 800 grit and then went over with a buffer and compound and it turned out great.

My son was telling me just yesterday that he used that CLR stuff on his white fiberglass hull and it came clean like new!...might be worth a try...they sell it everywhere, drug stores, etc.

clr is carp.

the proper way is to acid wash the boat. any marine mechanic or service will do this for a fee.

to do it at home it is a s simple as washing the boat in industrial stregnth toilet bowl and urinal cleaner. not the stuff that you buy in the box xstores......but the kind you buy from the industrial janitor shops. cost about 20 a gal.

dilute 50 50 with water. on tough spots use straight.

use a brush and bucket, or apply with a windex type sprayer.
use gloves.

your hull will we squeeky clean.

warning .......contains nasty stuff. use proper safety stuff......and plastic wrap galvinised trailers. dont worry if the trailer is painted.

What oops said im sure is true, but this is what i did and it worked awesome and it may be easier to find. if its the brown lake scum, lysol brand toilet bowl cleaner works GREAT. HAS to be the one with NO bleach, the bottle is blue and white with the crooked neck. i put it in a pump sprayer, straight, (garden sprayer), and sprayed it on the DRY hull. used a DRY foam mop to spread it around. no need for scrubbing, just let it sit min or two and you will see it just turn the brown to bright white before your eyes. careful, it will stain a galvanized trailer, if you wet the trailer first it helps but do not get the hull wet. i did it to my boat and couldnt believe it. HAS to be the lysol brand though, apparently it makes a difference. smells clean when your done too!!!

I have a 1993 Javelin that I tried to do this to. I went to my local boating store and bought some crap called On or Off. Don't buy it!!!! Its crap. Supposed to be an acid wash, smelled like it, but sat there on my boat like the water I run it in!!!! Save your money.

I agree. I've found that "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner spread directly on the worst of the scum, bubbles it right off. My boat sits in a slip in a Limestone bottom river. That combination of algea growth and limestone scale is tough. I've tried Muriatic Acid and it doesn't work as well.
