Re: Stubborn lower unit 60 HP Johnson
sounds similar to the '70 85 Evinrude I had until recently. If you have an electric gearshift (Mine did), the wires go up to the powerhead and have to be disconnected there, then pulled down and out with the lower unit. I replaced the rubber gasket that goes between the lower unit and housing, and wish I hadn't. I had trouble getting the lower unit up snug because the new gasket was hard to compress, and ended up stripping the bolt -- actually the aluminum housing that accepts the stainless bolt -- under the trim tab (the bolt Schematic is describing). Maybe the angle of that bolt that makes it a little more delicate.
