stuck exhaust cover

1974 Merc 9.8 hp 110

How do I remove an exhaust cover (or water jacket cover or any gasketed cover)? The bolts came out without drama, but the gasketed cover is stuck fast. I have tapped firmly with a rubber mallet, but haven't applied a lot of force. Haven't tried prying. Don't want to go after it without guidance.

Don't pry use a dead blow or a steel hammed and hardwood block so you don't hurt the cover some need to be more slammed than tapped, most take a pretty good blow to break them loose

Thanks. One little whack with the edge of a wooden block and a hammer and they (exhaust and water jacket covers) popped right off. Through bitter experience, I've learned to ask before applying pressure!
