I have a '64 Evinrude Lark 40 hp. I've been trying to pull the flywheel to check the points and condenser, but it won't budge. I have applied penetrating oil to the shaft just under the nut a couple times. I have a wheel puller sitting with pressure on the shaft a few days and have been tapping (almost beating) on the end of the puller's center bolt (not flaring yet). How much can I rely on the puller to pull it off? I'm afraid I might strip out the threads or break the 3 other bolts on the puller. I currently have grade 5 bolts trying to pull. Should I try grade 8 and more force on the center puller bolt? Should I try heat on the flywheel hub with a propane torch?

Re: Stuck flywheel

I would put more pressure on the puller, and yes heat would help but a propane torch wont give enough heat.use P.B. BUSTER oil.

Hi Amiga..<br /><br />As myles posted, try more pressure and soaking first. Use heat only as a last resort. Heat can have a bad effect on the magnets in the flywheel.

Re: Stuck flywheel

What kind of puller are you using? If it's a wheel puller, where you're grabbing the ring gear of the flywheel, stop. You're about to break the flywheel. You need to use a harmonic balance puller bolted the the three bolt holes close to the center of the flywheel. I think they're 1/4-20 bolts. If you're using the harmonic balance puller and can't get it loose, use an air or electric impact wrench on the center bolt.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Re: Stuck flywheel

Hit the center bolt pretty hard then tighten the bolt some more. Repeat until flywheel pops off.

Re: Stuck flywheel

just remember every time you hit that center bolt you are shocking the crank and bearings remember the thrust bearing ;)

Re: Stuck flywheel

Amiga,<br /><br />Here it is right from the OMC manual:<br /><br />"The flywheel may not 'pop' from the crankshaft taper when tightening the puller bolt. To 'pop' the flywheel, use a heavy PLASTIC faced mallet and tap the top outside diameter of the flywheel. Do not hit the center bolt to remove the flywheel.<br /><br />I never hit the top of the puller bolt, it transfers the force directly to the crank shaft and the bearing. Just soak the top of the crank shaft, apply good pressure on the puller and then tap with the mallet near the puller's 1/4 inch bolts. The vibration and pulling force of the puller will 'pop' it off the crank. When you reassemble the flywheel, do not use any oil on the crank shaft OR the inside of the flywheel crank taper, it's a clean dry fit.
