I am attempting to pull the gimabal bearing from my Vovlo SX drive. I have a 3 jaw slide puller in it and am unable to budge it. Any suggestions? I understand that it is possible to replace only the bearing and not the aluminum outer housing which comes with the bearing. Anyone have experience doing this?

Re: Stuck Gimbal Bearing

Hi.
I assume there was a retainer (snap ring ? can't recall part name) which has been removed. The last one of these I did was bear and I mean the snap ring. The bearing came out easily with the "retainer" removed.

Regards, crt

If there is a snap ring in the Volvo SX, I don't see it and the manual does not mention it. I will keep tugging.

Re: Stuck Gimbal Bearing

hello
I have experienced this on occasion.
there is no snap ring on the SX. the bearing is technically able to rotate 90 degress and be removed from the notches. however the manual says the notches face fwd when installing so you have to remove the entire thing to remove the bearing. the wavy metal strip is called a tolerance ring. it cannot or should not be reused if removed.if your puller has 1/2x20 threads them buy a length of stainless all thread. place your puller in the gimbal bearing. use a thick metal plate that will fit between the mounting studs with a 1/2 inch hole in the center use a large flat washer with grease and a nut to act as a draw nut. it will appy more pressure then just a slide hammer. takes longer but some times I have to use it.good luck and keep us posted on how this comes out :)
PS I found out a few years ago what happens sometimes when the bearing is placed with the housing notches af. it allowed the bearing to **** slightly on the drive shaft the next time the customer tried to remove his drive. they brought it to me you could not pull the drive nor reinstall it. I had to pull the motor and use a large brass bar(3"x 2.5 ft long) :) to drive the shaft and bearing out of the transom assy. that is why I follow the manual and put them in just like it says. the killer thing is yamaha I think says notches aft :)

Re: Stuck Gimbal Bearing

Nrladeere I had the same problem using 3 jaws on the slide hammer it kept coming out of the berring too I switched mine to 2 jaw and tighted the backstop witch forces the jaws out and hit it pretty hard and it came right out, dont know it just semmed easier with 2. Rodbolt I have a OMC Cobra outdrive and I have my 2 cutouts in the aluminum housing facing towads the back of the boat because that is how the one I took out was should I be concerned with cobra?

Re: Stuck Gimbal Bearing

I did get it out. The 3 jaw puller was not making enough bite on the back side of the bearing. A little work on the jaws to deepen them and it popped right out. Runs like new now with no noise. Interestingly enough it only acted up on a full turn. I did the U joints first thinking they were the problem, but this was it. It flet smooth when I checked it before reinstalling the lower unit the first time...Not alway that obvious I suppose.

Hello
BeerFloat
I am not sure. I would have to check the manual as to where OMC wanted the notches. I have seen one manual, yamaha I think , that said face nothches aft. if it worked a long time last time leave it be :) :)
good luck and keep posting :)
