Stuck if fwd gear

Last weekend I replaced my impellor and fitted the lower unit to the mid section. Fired her up, she ran sweetly, but it isn't in neutral even though I left it there.
I check with the manual and thought the lower shift shaft was properly aligned! So I thought! :(
Looking from the prop to the selector, its lobe is to the right and the sloping section to the left.
Any ideas where I have screwed up and how quickly correct it?
Thanks in advance
Mark

Re: Stuck if fwd gear

Mark...I'll venture a guess here.

When removing a Merc lower unit, the gear shift should be in FORWARD gear. This is where they naturally fall 'cause of the shift cam design. You probably removed the lower unit with it in neutral and the lower unit slipped into forward.

Remove the lower unit and put it in forward gear. Make sure the shift lever is in forward and reinstall.

Probably take care of the problem.

Keep us posted...thanks.

Re: Stuck if fwd gear

Mellowyellow: sorry I believe it is a 1983 70Hp (9341608/ Belgium), where can I check this? But I think I've read its 80?

O/BJim. I'm thinkin your spot on with my mistake. Clymers manual says put in neutral. Job for the w/end and I'll let you know how I go.

Another Qs: Should I put any sealant around the exhaust plate/ gasket??

And thanks again

Mark

80hp is a 4 cyl.

Do not put sealer on the exhaust gaskets.

OBJ is right about the alignment.

TMD
