stuck in forward

1989 40 hp Merc on a 24' pontoon boat. I went out and had to jumped off when I was ready to come in. After starting the moter, I shifted to reverse and the prop was evidently still in the mud and the engine died. After rejumping off and pushing out it shifted to reverse then to forward and I returned to boathouse, about 20 min at fast idle. When I shifted to reverse to back into the boat house it remained in forward but did throttle up in reverse. The engine starts fine but is in forward. The shift lever feels fine, can tell the forward, neutral and reverse positions. The linkage is all connected and the shift lever moves at the engine. Does this sound like something I can fix myself or should I take it to a dealer.

Thanks.... [*]

Re: stuck in forward

You may have damaged or broken a shift cable or shift shaft ck the cable first have someone shift the box while watching the likage at the motor to see if it moves

Re: stuck in forward

Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure the cable is not broken. I'll get someone to go with me and check them both. If the shift shaft is broken, is that a shop repair item?
