The other day I took my brother-n-law's boat to the lake. I got out to the middle and started fishing. When I tried to go to another location, it would not crank up. It is a 45hp Mercury Classic Fifty, not sure of the year 90s I think. No matter what I tried it would not work. I tried to start it w/ and w/o the throttle engaged, choke/no choke, made sure it had sparks on all 4 plugs, bled the gas line and then primed it to make sure it was getting gas, let it sit for a while to make sure I hadn't flooded it, spray gas mixture in it and then starter fluid but still nothing. What am I doing wrong? I ran fine at home with hose water running through it and it ran ok getting us out to our first stop. It has a brand new deep cycle battery. Now it did never plane out, but I don't know what that may mean in relation to the problem. ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED.

If it had spark on all 4 plugs and you force fed it gas, it should have *had* to run. :(

-W (stumped here)

If not for the part about having spark I'd say kill switch.

Jailermac, If you sprayed ether into a cranking engine and it did not run (for at least a few seconds), you either do not have any spark, or your compresssion is too weak to run the motor. I recommend you check both and report results.
