stuck in reverse 77 johnson 70hp

I am having trouble I went to the lake with my old fishing boat, It took forever to get it started but when I finally got it going it was stuck in reverse. when the gear lever is in neutral it slowly goes in reverse but noticable. if I put it in reverse it goes in reverse at about the correct speed but when I put the gear forward it goes full out reverse water shoots in the boat and it max's 70hp in reverse I need some serious help.<br />Thanx

take the engine cover off and with the engine turned off! have some one move your shifter while you look under the carbs, there is a coupling for your shif linkage there,,I bet the bolt has came out,,,have a look and you will see what I mean

Thanks Tonga I appreciate it. I took it back out to the lake and after taking a close look at it I found the problem. The gear cable plastic screw was stripped so it wasn't grabbing the gear selector. Should be a cheap fix.
