stuck in reverse

I have a 1981 9.8 hp mercury, i just replaced the impeller and after putting the lower unite back on i find i'm stuck in reverse and can't get into neutral or forward' I removed the lower unite again and i'm still stuck in reverse. Any idea on what i've done?

i am not familiar with a 81 but the shift is out of adjustment

Thanks for the feed back, I've checked the adjustment and it seems to be in the proper place.

Sounds like the shift lever and shift shaft in the LU are not in agreement. Take the LU off and check this.
