Hi All,

I have a 1969 Chrysler 9.9hp short leg outboard.Last week I struck the prop on a hidden rock.I lost forward and reverse and was leaking oil from the lower leg just above the prop.I did everything my manual said on how to remove the lower unit but it won't come apart. I even tried to remove the engine from the unit but it also is stuck.Could it be possible that the drive shaft is corroded to the engine and lower unit?(since it is a 69!) Is there a trick to free the shaft from these components?

Re: Stuck lower unit

When removing did you place the gear in forward and engage the gear by turning the prop? If so when you removed the four hex head screws from the base of the motor leg does it drop down at all? Even an inch or two. If no chances are it is siezed to the powerhead. You could try inverting the motor and if you can get it in spray a ton of PB Blaser in there on the drive shaft and let it work down the drive shaft to the powerhead. Then after it has soaked over night turn it upright and put a two by four on the nut holding the flywheel down and wrap it a couple of times. If you can get wood wedges in there and pound down also to try and free it from the head.

If you do get it off and fixed get a tube of anti sieze. Three bucks is well worth it.

Re: Stuck lower unit

walmart sells it. If you cant find that use liquid wrench. Dont use WD40. It is worthless as a penetrating oil.
