I am unable to get my oil filter off on my 2001 188SD I/O Hurricane Deck Boat. The engine is a Merc V6 Alpha One. The filter is difficult to get to, which makes the problem more difficult. I have been using a socket type filter wrench with a 1/2 inch ratchet. I can't get good leverage, and the socket keeps slipping off the oil filter. I tried the strap type wrench and have now damaged the filter causing a leak. I am thinking of using the hammer and screwdriver technique next, but I know that I will really have a problem if that doesn't work. Any suggestions out there?

You are going to replace the filter anyway, so go back in with the strap and let it crush the filter. It won't do any harm to the engine. The screwdriver and hammer will spill just as much oil into the bilge, and you might bust a hand swinging a hammer down there. You can add a universal joint and a few extensions to get the rachet end up above the engine (if you have the same type of strap wrench I use). Then just add a friend on a breaker bar while you hold the strap in place (wearing gloves), and it will come right off.

For a trouble job like this, I use the biggest tools I can get in there.

I have found with the strap type wrench to get close to the top of the filter where in is the strongest if possible. Some people I know have had to cut the filter off with a tin snip (metal cutting pliers) and peel it off.
