hope someone can help me. I have a 24 foot searay with twin engines that has been setting for quite a while. Now the steering is stuck. I took off all the linkage from the steering and both engines swivel back and forth so I know there is nothing wrong with the engines. I have had this problem before on an mercury outboard that I had left setting for a long time but was finally able to free it up. Does anyone have an answer for me to get this thing moving? Thanks. Bill

Re: stuck steering

Disconnect the steering cable where it attaches to the power steering unit. If you can then turn the steering, the problem is the cable end is corroded in the power steering unit.

Some engine and drive information would sure help, Make, model, year, type of drive, etc.

Re: stuck steering

I have a 1975 Searay 24 foot with twin 3.0 1987 engines with mercruiser outdrives. I don't think it has power steering because there are no hydraulic lines going to the steering unit on the transom. I will disconnect the steering from the steering unit tomorrow and see if the helm will turn. If it does turn does that mean there is corrosion in the tube and maybe some heat and penetrating oil will break it loose?

WOW, I am having the same PROBLEM only I have power steering.
twin 140's 1974 24' searay

cable in my case up to this point seems on in fact it looks like when I try to turn to the port it looks like it is pushing out of the gear box unhooked starboard linkage still will not turn outdrive.

I have 2 boats a 1977 22' searay cuddy weekender 220 v8 (Salvage/Part Boat) and a 1974 cuddy day cruiser twin 140's turning it in to a Weekender going to sell off the great running v8 to buy a gm 140 to replace the one that is bad in the 24' helm on starboard side which has the GOOD 14m0 and power steering pump

I have till now only had and worked on OMC's any suggestions for me as to where to start?
