Stuck Tilt Mechanism Volvo

Hello all. I have a venerable old Volvo 200 outdrive. The Tilt mechanism is stuck in its vertical housing and won't budge. The manual says to simply remove the two allen headed bolts at the top, and the whole thing should lift out the top. Mine's stuck solid.
I've put a fair amount of force on it, but nothing moves. Before I get out the hammer and prybar, I thought I'd ask the experts.
Anybody got a good trick on how to get this thing out?
Thanks.

It should come out as you said. It's corroded it there.

You could try putting a wrench on the upper cover where you adjust the spring tention and turning to get it to loosen up. It should turn in the hole.

Good luck.

Many thanks, Captmello. Wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something that needed to be removed first.
The parts all "look" to be made of aluminum alloy, so I'm hesitant to really attack it until I'm sure its simply stuck. Sounds like it is.
I'll try your idea and see if I can get it to budge... if so, maybe I can get some penetrating oil down between the tilt drive and the housing tube.

Better safe than sorry.:)

Thats what the forum is for.

What engine are you running in that old boat? Have any Pics?

Those tilt assemblies don't really fit that tight. There is an oring seal at the base. Grease the shaft when you reinstall and it shouldn't stick again.

Have a look at this thread may help you with your project.

Good luck!!

Many thanks again, Captmello. That link you sent is priceless. The shaft doesn't go down as far as I had thought. Hopefully, I can get it loose.
The 68 Lancer is a "project"... basically got it for free. Hull is very sound, no blisters, no rot that I can find anywere. Original engine is a Chevy 283 that numbers back to mid 60's Corvettes. Solid lifters, AFB carb, and all. Engine is now all disassembled and all over the floor of my garage.
Had some water in it and the cooling water jackets are packed solid with sand, rust, etc. I suspect the original owner gave up due to overheating problems.
I've starting building a 4 bolt 350 Chevy to replace it. All the "marine" stuff looks like it will just swap over.
What would you like to see pix of? I've attached a pix of the boat.
Only 80 of these boats made by Chris Craft in 1967/68. Mine was the fifth from the last made.

Sounds like you've got it under control, that boat looks great!!:)

350 is the way to go. Have you by chance run across an AQ number on any tags on the old engine? Just curious.

Good luck with it. Keep us up to date on your project.

Re: Stuck Tilt Mechanism Volvo

Captmello,
Thanks, its one of those boats that looks great from a distance, starts to look worse when you're within 10 feet of it (pitted chrome, etc), and then looks really good again when you look at the details (hull, etc). 41 years old and still has a shine to the gel coat. One of Chris Craft's "transition" boats when moving from wood to 'glass. Really thick laminated 'glass construction.
No AQ markings anywhere on the motor. The engine is a Chris Craft 283FLV (and so marked) indicating flywheel aft configuration. Chris Craft numbers on the bellhousing and then Volvo Penta from there back.
Hull form worked out so well for them that they used the same molds for the Corsairs and Commanders in 23 ft.
Engine looked like it was never apart before (except for the intake manifold). Serious wear rings at the cylinder tops, so this boat has been well used.
She has life left in her; couldn't stand to see her cut up. Owner advertised her widely; nobody wanted her. I've always been a sucker for the gal that nobody wanted to dance with....

Well I think it looks like a beauty. Newer boats all look the same, but the old chris crafts have a timeless look about them.

I talked to a guy who had an early 70's chris craft with an aq210 which had the flywheel toward the bow, what a mess. Glad to see yours is more conventional. I was seaching the volvo site for your motor but can't find that setup for that year. I'll bet it was exclusively for chris craft. However, go to this link, type in aq200a in the engine type box and have a look at the brochures. The second has a pic that looks almost like your boat.:)

You may very well be a better mechanic than I, but all I ask is that you do it right the first time. For your own sake. No bandaid repairs or you'll be working on it non stop forever!!

Let us know when you tear into that outdrive, if you haven't worked on them before, they are "unique."

Hope all goes well, I'll be watching for your posts.
