Stuck up motor......

Just purchased a deck boat with a 1998 Evinrude 90hp 2 stroke. Power trim and tilt worked fine on test drive. When the boat company took the boat out of the water they raised the trim to put in on the trailer supports. I noticed when I got home that the motor was raised about one half inch above the support rests (supports not touching) and it would not go back down. I can hear the motor run when I use the switch on the motor. Motor will not go up or down now. Where do I start looking? Is there a bleeder I can open to get the motor back down on the tilt rams?

Re: Stuck up motor......

whats the model #.... i think that was the last year they had a crossflow 90 and a looper 90 hp

the TNT trim units were different
if you have an ocean runner or an ocean pro, or the other 60 degree looper 90 HP, and it looks like this motor

rw51du.jpg

the MANUAL TNT release is that oval opening on the port side of the motor on the stern bracket, straight back from the "Y" in the word Hydro, on the jack plate mounted to this boats transom that is holding the motor( in case you dont know what a jack plate is)

Do you see the manual tilt lock in Bob's picture? It is not sitting on that thing is it?

Hey Bob, is that some sort of Hull Extension - trolling motor mount combo? it is very cool. Does it work?

Nice weld job...

It's not on the lock..I can move that out of the way since the motor was raised about 1/2 inch higher than was needed to put the lock in place. Looking for the model...motor cover is grey and says 90hp SPL Not like in your picture

Where is the release screw located? On the reservoir or on the piston??

Re: Stuck up motor......

if your motor cover says 90 spl...then it is not like the unit in my picture... it is different... how much?? i dont know.... if you look up a diagram of your motors parts in shopevinrude.com

you might be able to see where the manual release is....

Chris: those are flotation pods...that add more surface area to the back of the boat to lift it....usually done with very heavy motors added to the back of some boats.... the weight makes the boat squat... my boat really didnt need it, but i benefit when motoring slow in shallow water or especially when i am walking the boat out of VERY shallow water

that boat is a 1200 lb 20 ft wide 8 foot wide center console and it floats in about 4-5" of water... but still has a 12 degree deadrise

Re: Stuck up motor......

Are you shure your tilting it with the switch the right way?once had one with the wires backward.maybe throw the switch back and forth a few times to unlock it.I have heard of these locking up before and i think the trim cover on one of the cylinders has to be removed or something like that to unlock it.

Re: Stuck up motor......

I have the same motor (same year too), so I went out and raised it up, when you raise it up all the way there isn't really anything to stop it from coming back down.

I would take it back to where you bought it and ask them to lower it.

Re: Stuck up motor......

I had a 1988 SPL do that to me one time it got in a bind when I had it tilted all the way up.

What you can do is on the right side of the motor there should be a manual realease screw it's a large flat head and should have a pic of the motor with an arrow pointing down ( it will re recessed on the motor bracket you will see a hole look in and there will be a flat head screw) Losen the screw but hold the motor it should fall slowly by itself. Once it's all the way lowered tighten the screw and see if it will go up and down. If it does you prob are low on fluid.

To add fluid tilt the motor all the way up and add fluid to the reservoir it should be on the right side next to the trim pump and it's also a large flat head screw ( I use ATF fluid ) replace the screw and go up and down a few times this will bleed the system of air. Check fluid level after every other up and down cycle and refil as needed.

Also there's no transom saver bracket holding the motor up is there ?

Re: Stuck up motor......

The Manual tilt screw should not back all the way out usually its just a few turns , maybe he is refering to the resiviour fill plug. Post a pic of your motor and the bleed screw you are refering to. Is there heavy corrosion on this motor (Tilt tube/engine bracket/TnT assembly)?

Is the manual tilt pin not on the last set of holes , maybe the guy you bought it from moved it up so the motor wouldent fall all the way down when you trailerd it home?

True, if he found the wrong screw it won't do anything. I've never tried to take out the manual tilt screw, only loosened them, so I don’t know if they can be removed.

Re: Stuck up motor......

it was the bleed screw. Took it all the way out. Issue was NO fluid. Once I added ATF everything cycled fine

Re: Stuck up motor......

That's good. I'd moniter it closely make sure it's not leaking or letting water in. It's odd for fluid to just disappear it had to leak out somewhere.

we all learn something new from this one i think.just wondering, what made you decide to add fluid?
because it wasnt comin out the bleed screw?

Yep ..has to work like an hydraulic jack..got to be fluid if the bleed screw is all the way out.

Thanks for all the tips/ideas in getting this working
