I recently rebuilt the carbs on my 96 Johnson 88spl. When I start the motor for the first time after putting the boat in the water, it firs right up and shifts into gear like normal. If I run the motor at lower speeds it will restart and run fine all day. The problem is if I run it WOT for any distance at all it skill run great until I turn off the motor. At that it is hard to restart, throttle must be very advanced to start the motor and it dies before I can shift it back to idle and then forward into gear. It can be done but throttle must be moved to idle and then into forward gear very quickly or it dies. Any advice?

First make sure orfaces #3-13-7 are clear by pushing a small wire 'like a bread tie with the plastic removed,' into them.

I made sure all orifaces were clear when I rebuilt the carbs by spraying with berrymans b12 chemtool and running a wire through them and then I blew all orifices out with 100 psi air hose. The engine idles good and will run in forward and reverses at low speed all day until I run it wide open throttle and then turn the motor off when I stop to fish.

Are you sure that it is not overheating? Does the starter spin fast when you try to restart?

The starter spins the same everytime. I would like to clarify something though: when I said the motor starts fine before being ran WOT I meant to say the motor starts but not fine. I have to engage the throttle advance lever a lot everytime I start the motor whether it is warmed up already or not. Its just that after running WOT when I start the motor with the throttle lever advanced it dies before I can shift back to neutral and then into forward or reverse.

It should start easier than that. That engine should start right up with maybe just a touch of choke. Sounds like your low speed jets may have junk in them, maybe from your fuel tank, or your link n sync is off. Those carbs must be synced after you put them on. Get a good manual and don't skip any steps. There are numerous threads on link n sync if you do a search here.
