what i have:
1972 evinrude 65 hp. electric shift. if it is important it is attached to a 1971 tri hull 15 foot. glass boat. i purchases it used from an "old" fisherman. it ran ok the first time i put it on the water but i wanted more. next time on water at about 5000' altitude started to have stalling and slugish throttle control. when i got it home, 4500' altitude, with flush muff on i reset the slow speed jets to 1.1/2 turns from closed and tried to fire it up. slow to fire (cold blooded), once running and warm i could adjust slow speed to smooth idle. no bucket so i did not run under load. next trip out, about the same altitude, drained one battery trying to get it to fire. i think i had it flooded because by the time i came back with new battery the motor would run. not well but it ran. here the issue, with motor cover on at idle it stalls like it isn;t getting enough air. spent the rest of fishing trip running without cover. after several adjustments to carb the gps unit tells me the best i could get out of it is 17mph. fours hours of running comsumed 6 gallons of fuel. i am handy with a wrench and know my way around most electro-mechanical equipment but this motor hase me stumped. any suggestions on where to begine my search for a problem. we did comfirm that fuel is getting to engine.
