Hi all. First, I have a 2008 VP 5.7-300-j. Sorry for the longer post, just want you to see the whole picture!
This morning, I started the engines and once warmed, left slip. It was a bit windy and driving me into another boat, so I had to push the starboard motor a bit past idle to avoid a colision. Was difficult to tell exactly, but died very shortly after. Starter engages well. Lots of juice in the batteries.
Fuel pumps have recently been rebuilt. Fuel regulator was cleaned as well. New fuel filter was put in about a month ago when pumps were rebuilt.
Now there was some very old fuel in the tanks at the beginning of the season, but I had filled up about 3 weeks ago from near empty. Added a good dose of Lucas Oil cleaners as well at this time. Fuel dock at the marina is very busy and they run through about three trucks a week.
Spark is getting to at least the one plug I tried (screwdriver in the boot, then bridged to a ground).
Changed distributor and rotor for good measure. It was quite corroded.
New plugs in this season as well.
Also, side question, there is a center piece that the rotor sits on that was quite rusted. I sanded it down, but it is not fully clean. Is that just the item the rotor spins on?
Okay, so I changed the fuel filter again and threw in some new fuel into the filter (old fuel that came out was more yellow than I thought it probably should be).
Wouldn't turn over again.
I then decided to give it some juice as it was trying to crank. That worked. Very hard start though. Warmed up and ran fine.
Turned off, started again no problem, then took it for a 30 min boot on plane.
Any thoughts?? I'm at a loss and I don't want this to happen again.
Each fuel tank has like 250L still in them.
