stumping me 83 50 hp runaway

83 rude 50, compression in standards, spark 1/2 inch, carbs done, linc n sinc done. timing plate retracts as it should. power pack replace recently.

the problem, every time it starts, it wants to run away. about 3500 rpms. no matter where the throttle is set idle or advanced. can not slow it down other than turning it off.

One or both crankcases are sucking extra air from somewhere, TD. I would look at the reed plates and bypass covers.

I am by no means an expert, and you have helped me in the past so I will throw my .02 worth. If the carbs have a low speed circuit jet could that jet be too large? Did someone enlarge the jet while cleaning?

All they need to run faster is air, an air leak causing a lean condition.

got runaway under control, new reeds, n gasket. now backfires out exhaust on slow down. working on pulling flywheel to check key.

I think thats a mixture condition, can't remember which one.
Too rich or too lean.
