Guys, can I put my 50hp force in gear briefly while running on muffs. I just want to make sure it is going into both forward and reverse after adjusting the linkage.

Sure you can. Just make sure the hose is out of
the way.

I use a big plastic bucket to do my running of the motor. It works like a charm and if I shift into gear it drains and busts the bucket. :)
Actually it picks up water pretty darn well almost like at the lake, better than any muffs I have tried. Wife got it at Walmart to hold cans.
It prety wide and deep. With the drive raised I put the bucket down and then lower the unit untill it moves forward. The I have my kid fill the bucket. He is always out of the way and he holds the key till I get ready to start.

How high does the water level need to be?

at least higher than the parting line between the lower and the exhaust housing. the pump may not prime itself and is desined to be submerged at start up. if it does not prime and runs dry 30 seconds and damage starts.
