I disassembled he carb for cleaning, that's when I found I needed a new needle.

Anyway as I'm reassembling I notice there is a sort of hump shaped area on the outside of the fuel bowl. It does not have a corresponding shape inside. Not really sure why it's there. But looking at pictures of other folks carb the hump is sometimes positioned to the front sometimes to the back, sometimnes to the side.

So, does anyone know why it's there and does it matter where it is aligned?

IF I understand correctly: The "hump" is actually a non-relieved section of the bowl. This configuration was frequently found on small engines. Especially on the smaller engines--15 and below--clearance is tight and the relieved section of the bowl is there either to clear the shift linkage or fuel line. IF you have no clearance issues, then position the bowl so the deepest part is where the front of the float drops. If there is a clearance issue, position the bowl so the shallow part is at the problem point.

OR: If it is the cast bowl, there would be a small "hump" in the lower edge. This is there for a pressed-in barbed fitting for the enrichment valve hose. If that carb does not feed an enrichment valve or if your engine does not have one, then the hump would not have been drilled for a fitting. If this is the case, then position does not matter at all.
