Keep the boat at a storage yard. Behind a local-family-owned vacuum cleaner repair shop in an old part of town. Some of the family actually live on the premises. A lot of cats in the yard, which I never complain about, because I've never seen any evidence of rodents around inspite of all the pecan trees.
Last time out (over a month ago, jeez I'm working way too much) preparations for a 3-day camping trip included charging the trolling battery. Something out of place in that compartment caught my eye just as I'm lowering the lid - black, furry, about the size of an adolescent rat.
Yup it was a kitten, so new its eyes were still shut. Lucky I discover it when I did instead of 6 hours and 100 miles later. Wrapped it up in a towel & took it back to the vacuum shop - hopefully they were able to reunite it with mamma.
How it got in there is no real mystery - I built that cabinet and haven't got around to glassing in around the sides, there's enough of a gap for a mamma cat to tuck a baby in out of the way.
No evidence that any actual birthing took place on board - must have just been a good place to wait out t'storms the night before.
