replacing my main fuel filter; originally a ceramic-type filter, replacement is a regular paper-element type. my manual says "Filter element--open end of filter element MUST BE down" and "spring--on top of filter element". now, seems like the open end of the element should be facing the fuel pump, and the spring should be beneath it, contacting the bowl. do i (or the manual) have up and down confused? i consider down to be where gravity takes something--so in this case down is the fuel bowl, and up is the pump. anyway, i installed it fuel pump-->gasket-->open end of element-->closed end of element-->spring-->bowl.
