Stupid Question from New Owner

OK, my dad said the only stupid question is the one not asked so here goes.

Being a new boat owner I am hearing a lot about WOT, suggested RPM range, props, etc.

In reading my owners manual for the Alpha 1, 5.0 (1995 model) it states this engine has a rev limiter.

So is a rev limiter common and if so why all the concern about over reving the engine. I assume the limiter acts as on an automobile..........it simply starts droping cylinders when an over rev situation occurs.

Understanding over reving is not good, but why not purchase a prop that pushes the maximum RPM before hitting the limiter.

Again, perhaps a stupid question but just interested in some opinions.

All of this because I am about to purchase a new prop to replace the one destroyed a few weeks ago.

Thanks.

Re: Stupid Question from New Owner

The absolute best performance and economy you can get from your boat is to choose a prop that allows the engine to operate at or very near the upper end of the engine manufacturers wide open throttle rpm band with what you consider will be an average load. If the manufacturer suggest 4800 RPM is the maximum rpm, shoot for that. If the engine over revs you have too little pitch. If it cannot reach that rpm it is overpitched. If the prop is wrong at WOT it wrong across the entire rpm band.

Did you really destroy your prop? Many props can be repaired.
Tell us the details on your boat/motor.
And if you have your prop size with your max rpm and speed.
