This post was going to be titled, "Clever Smart Tab SX Install", until I looked at the pic I was going to post.

My boat is on a lift. I waited for a nice day low tide, lowered the lift a bit, waded out into the muck, and installed the tabs while the boat was on the lift.

I felt pretty clever, since I only dropped one screw in the water, and actually found it in the muck on my first try!

I took some pics for posting here, and didn't notice until JUST NOW that I put the actuator/shock absorbers on UPSIDE DOWN!

I'm not sure this matters, though....

Do I have to wade out into the muck again to flip them over?

Thanks,
Stupid Jim

I think you do. If I recall from the instructions, there's a difference in the way the ends are made and if you leave them that way it can cause them to bind and break.

Yeah,

It might not matter, but I don't suppose it would hurt to do it right.

So, back into the muck for me.

Re: Stupid Smart Tab SX Install

When installed up side down the oil in the cylinder which lubricates the seals and creates the slow, smooth, dampened reactions to compression and extension moves to the wrong end. The results are no lubrication (which for short periods will not be and issue) and rapid movement. Change them. Here is a trick. remove the plate end bolt and nut to detach the actuaotr from the plate. Remove the end fitting from that end. rotate the actuator counter clockwise until the actuator comes off the upper endfitting. This will leave the endfitting attached to the transom bracket. Flip the actuator right side up and screw it into the end fitting on the transom bracket. Attache the other endfitting to the bottom on the actuator and re-install the actuator onto the plate. This avoids the necessity of removing the snap and lock pin on the top of the actuator - they don't come out easily.

Jdeagro,

Thanks for the expert info, especially the tip about the tips.

I haven't tried the tabs out yet, so no harm done.

The weather report calls for a nice muck day tomorrow, so,
once more into the muck!

Thanks again,
JIm
