styrofoam?

in my 14foot sea king... i took out the three seats/supportbeams.. and inside those each was a chunck of styrofoam... my question is why? theres no way thats what made my boat float so what else would it be there for

under normal conditions, displacement makes your boat float. If it get's swamped, the foam will keep it from going all the way under.
