1991 Subaru Loyale water pump.
Anyone got any secrets as to the easiest way to replace it?

The Haynes manual is useless on this.

Looks like the bolts that hold it on also go through the timing cover.

Also the little hose is behind the a/c unit and power steering pump.

Any ideas?

Big hands and small places don't work real well.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Subaru water pump

I have a 90 subaru legacy station wagon and I have a haynes manual that covers your loyale but am in the process of moving and most of my books went to storage. I belive it is still in the car as I just put a fuel pump on it and referenced the book I will look in the morning and can give you the step by step.

Re: Subaru water pump

Richard, remove all of the timing belt or just the one section under the a/c unit?

And how do you get to the bypass hose that sits under and behind the a/c unit and power steering pump?

Re: Subaru water pump

Are you sure you have the 2.2L? As far as I know only Legacys/Imprezas had a 2.2L, your Loyale should have a 1.8L.

Re: Subaru water pump

If its the 1.8 you don't need to remove timimg belt just the outer cover. On some Subarus I have had to remove the Power steering pump and A/C compressor to get the hoses. This can be done very gently with out unhooking any of the steering or A/C lines. If it is the 2.2 or 3.3 I would recommend that you have aa experienced Subaru Technician do it as the complete timing belt has to come off and you can srew up a motor in a hurry if it slips any will to are working on it. Hope this helps. Rick

Re: Subaru water pump

Johnsan 1, I did not say it had the 2.2 and yea, it's the 1.8.

Yea Richard, but does all of the cover have to come off or just the right and center sections.
I got the big hose/pipe out, but I kinda figured that the pumps would have to be moved out of the way.

Just replaced the PS pump 2 weeks ago and did not see any problems with the WP at that time.

Oh well, thanks guys.

Re: Subaru water pump

You mentioned removing timing belts, according to the above info that only applies to 2.2L engine.

That is why I mentioned it, your post made it seem like you were confusing the above information. Only trying to help you out, I think thats what you asked for.

Re: Subaru water pump

I meant the cover, not the belt.
Never seen any belts that come in sections.
Thanks for the help.

Looks like the center section will have to come off too and now it looks like I have to get the crankshaft pulley off with no way to hold it still.

Re: Subaru water pump

Some vehicles use more than one timing belt, which some people refer to as sections. No offense but this isnt rocket science, its a water pump, ive read the proceedure from repair manuals a few times now and I even owned one of these under-powered monsters for a long long time (200K miles long), im not sure what else to say besides dig in and go from there. They dont exactly give you much room under the hood on these, I think thats where the problem is.

Re: Subaru water pump

Yea that's for sure on the no room.
I like them but they don't like me.

Looks like the a/c and power steering pump has to be moved in order to have enough room to do anything with it.

Again thanks all.
