My 1976 15hp Evinrude sunk in my canal for 10 hours. When pulled out it took 3 hours until I was able to pull spark plugs and crank out water and spray with WD-40 then put in oil and drained.. Then I removed and cleaned the carburetor blew out all the passages until there was no water left. I replaced all gasoline in tank and tubing. I changed out lower gear lube. I cleaned all exposed electrical wires and cleaned and put dielectric grease on them. AIl wires have continuity. I have spark from both plugs. I have tried putting in gas oil mixture in carb and pulled spark plugs putting in gas\oil mix, starting fluid, carb cleaner, and seafoam. I wiped down entire engine. I have blown the whole thing with compressed air at least 10 times. I have pulled and pulled it for one week now and it will not start. I only have a flywheel puller with arms not the kind that uses the three bolt holes in flywheel. Can I use the puller I have? I have not found anything except the low speed needle valve that is a little worn. The only time it seemed the motor tried to start was when I was checking spark and with no throttle. I am too poor to send to shop but I hate to give up. I worked very hard to get this motor running before I stupidly sank my boat. Any chance it will still run?

It was not running when it sank in fresh water.

Manual say that you MUST get the motor running as soon as possible.---The manuals are not joking either.------Any water inside the motor will quickly corrode the shiny / precision bearings !!!

You say you have a spark at the plugs, does that mean you just tested them by holding them against the block,if so that test is worthless.the spark must jump at least a 1/4 inch clear air gap.If it won't do that you have to go over all the electrics again.wires coils the whole 9 yards.A harmonic puller does not cost much or you can borrow one from Autozone but don't delay,as R1 says ,every minute counts.

I know time is important that is why I am worried it is dead. Thank you for the info on the puller. Can I test spark power with multimeter as tester I bought does not work. I have pulled and pulled until I think arm will fall off. I figure it is probobly electrical, too.

You cannot test 40,000 Volts spark with a multimeter.

I did not think so but I had to ask. I will get flywheel pulled today and hopefully get it running today.

If you're going to use the puller and something to push it off make sure its a rubber mallet or something soft so you don't bend the flywheel up.
Also try to find what torque you're going to have to tighten it to or else you'll be pulling the flywheel off for other reasons

That motor has points, so there's a good chance the moisture has corroded the contacts. Might even be a bead of water in there, effectively shorting them out.

OK. I got he flywheel pulled without too much problem. Thank you for the information on which one to get. I sprayed WD40 all over and under the plate. Then sprayed everything with electronics parts cleaner. Got all the debris out of the area. So now I only need to clean the points by putting a piece of sandpaper between them? Check the continuity of the wires, then put it back together and try to start again?

You can use that lightly until they shine bright or use scotch brite, and yes I would check all the wires. I can't stress enough that you make sure you get that flywheel as close as you can to the torque setting mentioned in the manual or else it'll rip stuff up.

I checked cleaned everything looked good. There was some water in it. And I torqued it back correctly according to service manual. Now there is no spark to either plug. I guess I just need to throw it back into the canal. OK melodrama is over. What can I do next?

Did you double check that the points are set correctly? If so I would move on to the condenser and see if you're getting any readings, if you're unfamiliar on testing them I would take a quick search.

If the condenser is good and still no spark I would try to see if there is spark at the coil.

In your first post you had spark... so now you don't? after cleaning the points did you gap them on the highest spot the cam?

Did you find the flywheel key? was it bent or sheared? did you reinstall it?

while the flywheel is off you should be able to take out the plug and spin the motor to see if your points are sparking before you put it all back together?

If you decide to throw it in the canal I have one behind my house you are welcome to... LOL JK

Ok. I am not sure about the condensers test. I removed them and put one lead of my multimeter set on ohms to wire end and then touched the case. Should I get a reading or should it be zero? Instructions I have are not clear. Also found out one of the spark plug wire terminals is broken. Is there a better way to attach new terminal. Do you just stick it on without soldering or connector or anything? How could that be a good connection?

You should be getting readings up and down to infinity, most likely if no reading the condenser is shot and they cost around $5, and if you get the whole new plug some of them screw in.
