Hi guys, new here..
I was offered a 1992 Maxum 22 ft hull with a mercruiser 5.7 I/O setup.. the boat was submerged around 2 years ago.. the hull was cleaned, and still looks great, but the engine/ outdrive was not serviced at all.. the engine is obviously a loss, the cylinders are still full of water... could the outdrive have been hurt by being submerged and left like that?? the guy wants $600 for the boat.. also, how hard is it to remove this engine? I'm a chevrolet technician by trade, so i know the engine inside and out, i just dont know anything about the mercruiser stuff...

Salt water or fresh water submersion?......
The drive should be OK, but you will need to change the u joints & probably the yoke seal....
If it was submerged in salt water, I would pass because of what salt water most likely did to the electronic components.....;)

If the drive shaft welded itself to the gimble bearing via rust, it could be a mofo to get the drive off to pull the engine. There is a pretty good chance of that.

Water can run into the drive via the drive bellows.....so figure the drive is probably toast too.

All depends if it was salt or fresh water. Run if it was salt. Otherwise plan on spending some dough on anything electrical that will soon be failing. As well the drive and motor. Drive is probably fine though if it was fresh water. I would flush and pressure check the drive and replace the u-joints and gimbal bearing.

i do believe it was brakish water... not for sure... it was a katrina victim. i do know the dipstick was rusted off inside the block, and the carb does not have the classic white puffy corrosion classic to saltwater...

50/50 chance; the engine is trashed'
check the drain on the drive, and see it water is in there.
