Hi Guys and Gals. It's amazing how much experience and knowledge is available on this board -- too bad I didn't know about it before buying my first boat. My problem -- I bought my first boat with a Yamaha Stern Drive! Actually, I love the boat -- 1992 Celebrity bow rider, 5.0, Yamaha YEMS, fresh water only and it is currently running great. As a former race car builder (competitive amateur) and engineer, I know the value of preventative maintenance -- and certainly reinforced by following the posts on this forum. So...the problem I have is that NEW parts for the Yamaha are either not available or cost 6 to 10 times the comparable parts for a Mercruiser (whether this is gross price gouging by Yamaha dealers or the factory -- or the combination of both, I don't know). For example, A forum member tells me that YAMAHA riser GASKETS are $31.00 EACH! That kind of parts cost doesn't make it easy to take things apart for simple maintenance. If the rig wasn't running well and money so tight (about to retire), I'd consider a re-power with a Mercruiser or Volvo. So...I'm hoping that some of you have already found ways to substitute non-Yamaha parts and I'll be posting a series of questions dealing with specific issues. I'll start with my immediate concern -- exhaust manifolds and risers.

The manifolds and risers are original. Other than for stainless steel ($$$$), I haven't located any company offering non-OEM. The Yamaha risers have threaded bosses in their sides to secure parts (throttle and shift assemblies, etc.). Has anyone substituted Mercruiser (or equivalent non-OEM) manifolds and risers for the Yamaha? My guess is that I would have to fabricate plates to somehow be secured to the risers so that I could then mount the Yamaha engine components. Plumbing the exhaust may also be a problem but one that should be solvable with high temperature exhaust hose.

Any thoughts/comments/advice (other than selling the boat to some other newbie)? Anyone want to volunteer their parts substitution successes? I'd appreciate any help

Re: Substitute Parts - Yamaha Stern Drive -- Manifolds/Gaskets

Hi. Lots of readers but no responses to my post. Anyone have any thoughts/comments/suggestions on substitutes for OEM Yamaha manifolds, risers, and gaskets? I'm reluctant to spend $2500 on SS parts but I'd rather do that then spend $1200 or more on OEM cast iron when riser gaskets are going to cost $31 each. Thanks.

Ayuh,......

The Problem is going to be Bracketry,+ meeting the Yamaha part of it downstream.....

I haven't seen anything, anywhere to help you,.... Looks like it's going to be Self-Engineered,...
By You......

I just spent $8.00 a piece for Mercruiser gaskets to mount my SSteel risers to my GLM manifolds going on my 4.3LX Mercruiser......

Hey thanks for the reply Bond-o. I always enjoy your posts - combination of great information/insight and funny banter with the other major contributors. OK I guess I'm on my own since no one else replied. If it ever warms up and it stops raining on weekends, I'll head for some marinas to look for discard SBC manifolds from various manufacturers to see if any designs lend themselves to replacement for the OEM YAMAHA. If that doesn't work, I'll monitor the engine carefully and as soon as I have any hint of a manifold or riser leak, I'll order a set of the Aussie SS one piece units. Oh well, the things one learns too late in life.

Re: Substitute Parts - Yamaha Stern Drive -- Manifolds/Gaskets

I am in the same boat. In my area it is hard to find a well maintained boat and also stored in doors. I finally found a 1992 Rinker 186 with a Yamaha 4.3L I/O. I know Yamaha from motor sports and didn't even give it a second thought that I would end up in the situation that I am now.
Took the boat out for my first time and it overheated! I watched the temp gauge and shut it down when it started to get over 180 and then got a tow in. Got it home and started in to it. Discovered it had a very bad Sea Water pump impeller and it needs to be replaced. Reading other posts I learned it would be a good idea to clean out and flush the entire cooling system as the rubber from the broken and worn sea water impeller might be stuck in the cooling system. I went another step in to it and removed the manifolds and risers to find out that the last person to work on this didn't put the riser gaskets back in place and instead just used a ton of some type of silicon sealant that was actually clogging half the water passages.

SO long story short, I am now in need of parts, and this post popped up.

Did you ever figure out a way to incorporate non-Yamaha parts on the exhaust?

Thanks -
