I have an 86 Bayliner with a 85hp Force outboard (856X6L). The boat does not have a tachometer. Can I use an automotive application test tach?

Thanks!

No.It has different components. You will need a 20 pole tach.
Any Mercury Dealer can help. This site sells stuff so buy here.
Be carefull of e-bay.They sell all kinds of tachs but usually the wrong stuff.
The Marine connection in Ft.Pierce,Fl. Has tons of used parts.J

Re: Substitute Tachometer?

You could get a tiny tach or similar...they are inductive pickup but I dont think any of them have wires long enough to reach the dash. They are good for adjusting idle and checking WOT rpm. Ebay has tachs...old used tachs and new old stock tachs from greatlakesskipper. Just make sure you check the specs on the tach in the listing...greatlakesskipper lists specs for every listing. Good luck
