Hi Forum,
Can't thank you all enough for helping me get to this point on my water pump rebuild. I have a 6 HP Johnson Sailmaster,model J6SLCOB. I have the gearcase out and the new parts ready to install. Instructions call for the following OMC products:gasket sealing compound #317201, needle bearing grease #378642, and moly lube#173250. I do not want to skimp on this repair, as I plan on keeping this motor for a long time. That said, are there substitutes for these OMC products that are of the same quality and durability? It will be a major PIA for me to round the specific OMC products up. One more question. When I reassemble the gearcase, what is the best way to prevent thread seizure on the bolts for the next time I disassemble? It will see salt water use. Any info is appreciated!

Gasket sealing compound can be found at any automotive parts store... comes in a can that has a brush attached to its screw off cap.

Needle bearing grease.... you can use vaseline or any other type grease for that matter. It'll dissolve as soon as the fuel/oil mixture hits it.

Moly lube is simply a anti corrosive grease, also available just about anywhere.

Thread siezure can be avoided simply by applying a small thin coat of grease upon the threads... or Anti Seize, whichever you prefer.

Use marine grease on the threads. Some anti-seize products will corroed if you don't have the right one.

Avoid any copper based anti-seize. copper is a big no-no.... around aluminum.

3M 847 is also great for sealing the lower unit, but it can be a little tricky to track down. I believe Graiger's carries it and/or you can get it offline.
