Subwoofer Install

Hi everybody...Well I have another project Im about to start working on. I plan on installing two 10" Kenwood subwoofers (marine grade) with an 800watt Kenwood amp.

Just wondering if anybody else has installed subs on their boat. Not sure whether to install in the cuddy cabin or towards the back near the engine. I have dual batteries so power supply shouldn't be an issue. Just looking to get the most "bump" for my money.

Re: Subwoofer Install

If you have room for either place I would suggest putting them where you spend most of your time. If you install them outside you might consider installing an on/off switch in the remote turn on lead from the radio, that way if you're below decks you can turn the sub amp off and still use the radio/speakers down in the cabin.

The kenwood subs are free air subwoofers or infinite baffle, this means they will work in an extremely large enclosure such as cut into the fiberglass.

Keep in mind infinite baffle does NOT mean they will just work screwed to a board or mounted in a seat bottom. You must ensure that there is no way for the sound waves coming from the rear of the sub to catch up to the ones produced from the front of the sub or you will experience cancellation. Done correctly they sound as good as a non-free-air sub in a matched sealed enclosure.

Thanks for the info. Looks like you have a nice stereo set up. I also have one mroe question...All of my stereo equipment is marine grade except for the amp. Is this gonna be a problem? Can I just mount it under my seats where it will stay clear of any water or mists. If not what kind of marine grade amps do you recomend?

Re: Subwoofer Install

I put a sub in my bowrider a couple years ago. I made a sealed box that fit into the recession below one of the bow seats. I used a standard sub and amp that I had laying around. They haven't given me any problems yet, but they stay pretty dry. I have my amp mounted on the kick panel behind the passenger side dash. I would recommend installing a switch for the amp remote lead. If your like me, there will be times when you dont't feel like hearing the bump!

It's done all the time, and I suggest if you're going to use a non marine amplifier mount it in a dry location up off the floor. If your boat has carpet and it gets wet it will hold moisture which you don't want around that amp. Put it in a storage compartment or other nice dry location. If its a new amp and has a warranty if it gets water damage you can forget about getting it replaced.
