Well As some of you know I froze a motor last winter (my dumbass... but I learned something) I bought a used motor and have been doing the change myself. (165 hp omc stringer electric shift)

Good news. I fixed a BUNCH of issues. The big one. New intermediate housing!!! I have TILT WOO HOO... (after fixing about 10 issues from the guy that did some repairs for me)

Second good thing SHE RUNS!!!!! WOOO HOO and actually sounds pretty good, for a CHEAP used engine...

SO here are my questions.... and issues.

1 can I run it out of water (hooked to water) with the drive UP? its really LOUD with it up (one of the two ball gears is a little more worn that I would like but I am sure it is good for a season or two)

2 if I can only run in DOWN, How do I get it all the way down? it hits the ground before it is all the way down.. (those are the simple ones)

3 The rubber hose that connects the exhaust elbow to the intermediate/bell housing is leaking... is that SPECIAL hose or can I go to my hose supply and get so decent hose and be ok?

4 (this one is my main concern) when hooked to the hose... I am getting a stream of water shooting out of the intermediate housing Right next to the ball gears... spraying on the gears. it looks to perfect to be NOT NORMAL.. but is it? does it pump water on the ball gears to keep them lubed and cool? I cant get in there really good right now. there is water on the ground from running cooling water. I dont want to lay in it to take a picture.. maybe tomorrow if I need to.

5 the valve cover says run 93 octane fuel... the motor HAS been rebuilt at some point. do you think that is necessary? I am sure it is set for Unleaded, but high octane??

6 throttle cable.... I have to move the throttle to about 45 degrees forward before the carb end starts to move... is there an adjustment for that somewhere?

7 (easy one) what should I set the timing to?

Thanks so much for all the input I could NOT have done it on my own without Iboats and its Knowledgeable people!

Re: SUCCESS!!!!! and a couple questions...

Just run the drive as low as you can get it with out hitting the prop. That should be good. Yes water to cool the ball gears. If ball gears have 50% or more they are good.

Set timing back 2-4 degrees if you not run premium to avoid knock.

Leaking hose. Probably fried form the inside due to lack of water at some point. If it is the same dia on both ends yes just get some HD hose that will take the exhaust and hot water from the engine.

Re: SUCCESS!!!!! and a couple questions...

WOW that was quick THANK YOU. that is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear. (especially about the water on the ball gears) the one on the motor side is 10% WORN MAYBE... The one on the drive side... at least 35% or more... they are a mismatched set so I don;t expect them to last long, but at least the rest of this season.

I had so many other issues I thought that was one that could wait... and it's a pretty easy fix... and semi costly to do RIGHT so it can wait.. LOL

ANy idea on the timing setting normally" my guess (top of my head) 8 degrees?

edit: oh yea and the prop is not on it. so I can drop it pretty low..I figured i did not need it on to run it...
