Well, I'm already looking forward to next summer and possibly a new(used) boat. I'm looking to spend around 10K. I'd like to have a 19-22' cuddy cabin. I've looked aprices here in Ohio and I see that I can get a nice SR, Baja, Chapparel, for around, maybe a little more than a Bayliner. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I may want to look at? Are there any years of SR, Baja, Bayliner, I should stay away from? The most I look to do with the boat is stay out for a weekend on Lake Erie with the wife and three kids, sometimes not the kids:) Thanks.

Re: Suggestions on a 19-22' cuddy cabin

depends on what you want to do.
if you plan to fish alot get a walk around cuddy.
if you dont like them & still plan to fish alot get one that at least has a finished deck with no carpet or removable carpet (snap in).
they are alot easier to clean & you know that all the wood has been covered, but with carpet you wont be able to tell unless you rip it up.
-
then there is a self bailing cockpit & a non-self bailing.
i would try to get the self bailing, incase you had to leave on the water you wouldnt have to worry about the bilge pumps as much.

-
i can tell you in a heavy down pore, with a
non-bailing the bilge fills up quick.
-
i have the trophy 1802 walk around, for the size its great, but has a non bailing cockpit. that is one of the biggest draw backs. along with no access to removing the fuel tank.
-
one other thing to look at is whether or not you can remove the fuel tank with out cutting up the deck.
some have a factory access plate that is scewed down.
-
hope that helps

Same here on the fiberglass cockpit liner. 96 SR 215 express. Fiberglass, non-self bailing. Wish it did. Water gets in no matter what. Mostly through transom walk thru door and transom shower. Wish i'd have known that when i had the mooring cover made....

Get enough power you want at least a 6 in the 19' anything bigger than 19-20' you want an 8.

Don't discount an aluminum boat if you don't mind better fuel economy, easier trailering, decreased maint, no wooden stringers at the expense of ride and looks (?).

Can get by with much less power in an aluminum boat. watch for leaky rivets and rotten transoms.

i had a 19' Sea nymph B/R previously and loved it. they also made a Great lakes special cuddy like a Starcraft Islander, Crestliner eagle etc.

Also look into outboard vs. sterndrive pros and cons. My outboard was a breeze to maintain and winterize.

in a cuddy i wouldn't look at anything less than 22'. in a 19' the cuddy is just too small to be useful other than for storage of gear etc. as for overnighting in one, forget it. are u looking at a baha or baja? there 2 different manufacturers. don't even consider a baha, there a piece of crap.

Re: Suggestions on a 19-22' cuddy cabin

Baja is what I wanted to type. I'd love to have an outboard. I have a 80hp Merc 800 right now on my 16ft and I love the outboard setup. Do they make cuddy cabins like I'm looking for with an outboard engine? Would my 96 Yukon(auto,5.7,4WD) be able to tow a 20-22 foot boat? Any boats to stay away from? I'm well versed on the Bayliner info. I'd actually look at a Bayliner after 92 or so, but for the money they are asking, I can get a boat with a much better reputation and only a few years older. Any opinions on that?

Re: Suggestions on a 19-22' cuddy cabin

I have a Baja 22 Caliber Twilight Cruiser and I can tell you a 22' Cuddy Cabin boat is nowhere near large enough for a wife and 3 kids.
We have a full camper enclosure for ours and while the cuddy will sleep 2 adults very comfortably there is no where for 3 rugrats to bed down, except the cockpit floor. Our 13 year old (who is 6'3") can't find a place to bed down other than the floor,(and it's too short), you can't use the sundeck because the cover slants down to much.
Wife and I - or son and I can easlily spend a weekend on it, but adding 3 kids would be impossible. You need a bigger boat than a cuddy.

our 215 SR has tons of room for my wife and I maybe 1 or 2 small children. Maybe look for back2back seats in the cockpit and a bench across the stern...

If it can't, I don't know what could! The label on your drivers door jam should show towing capacity (I think)?

Re: Suggestions on a 19-22' cuddy cabin

I think it's rated at around 5500lbs. I just wasn't sure what the weight of a 20-24' fiberglass cuddy was. I like to leave alot of room for error.

bomar, Looks like you live in Marysville. I'm in Reynoldsburg. E-mail me at cop_firearms@msn.com. I have some questions for you about places to boat around here and other things. Thanks.
