Suggestions on how to build an engine test tank??

Greeting from The Sooner state,
I have two outboard motors that need adjustment from time to time,,, like almost everytime I go to the lake it seems. I often tune the engine to run perfectly on muffs to only be dissapointed trying to replicate the same setting in the water. I would like to build a test tank that I can have the engine run as if it where in the lake, if this is possible. What is the criteria of accomplishing this?? I have several 100 gallon fiberglass tanks and was thinking about cutting the top off one, filling it up with 90-100 gallons of water and then make adjustments to the engine as needed. Is this worth while and can I duplicate lake like conditions?? I'm seeking input as to dimensions, depth etc... Or is this a complete waste of time?? Thank you in advance for your time and input.

Doesn't you neighbor have a swimming pool that you could use when they are not home ??? :D

You could go to WalMart and get the biggest plastic tub that you can find.

A tub of any sort will only be marginally better than running on the muffs, IMHO, as you would not be able to go up through the throttle range in gear, without the prop sucking some air. Maybe move closer/next to the lake???

The tank you have will work fine. Don't need to cut the entire top off. Just make a hole big enough to drop the lower unit into. That will muffle the noise and if you want to check the unit in gear, will keep the water (at least some of it) from escaping.

I picked up a 55 gal trash can on wheels at an auction for $5.00, build my stand to fit the can.

since you already have tanks you're set, but I've seen 55 gallon plastic barrels, laid on their side, part of the top cut off. This gives you more space behind the prop. A cover is important for the reasons stated. And a drain, preferably with a garden hose fitting.

Stay simple, use barrel flusher & stand. The only drawback is that you cannot test at high gear speed, will splatter almost all water out from barrel, will need a special test prop to do so. Install a spout and garden hose for dirty water evacuation straight sewer drainage if that procedure ain't breaking the law...

Happy Boating

run tank.jpgrun tank hose.jpgrun tank full.jpg

This is what I came up with and it works great. I can control the water going in allowing me to run in gear without any trouble. This method allows for a better example of how my engine will run in the lake. I hope the pictures post, this is the first attempt.

Now for the details:
Idle rpm - 1081-1090
Wake speed rpm - 860-900
Ambient temp. - 79 degrees
Engine temp. (measured from the top of the head) - top cylinder 151 degrees,, bottom cylinder 148 degrees

How to these numbers compare to specs???

Thanks

At idle alright. Throttle more than idle in gear and see what happens...

Happy Boating

The no wake rpm, first notch from neutral - 814-830. I'm using a champion plug QL77JC4 gapped @ .040

JS - Nice tank. Can't help with the other Q's, my motors are all older.
