Just picked up an 89 sunrunner 236 a few hours and cannot find any information on this particular model. Owner didnt have much in the way of documentation either. Boat seems to be in great shape considering its age just would like to do some cleaning up and restoration, parts swap etc.

Also new to the boating world, motor revs clean in neutral, in drive seems to not wanna rev past 3800, doesnt wanna get up on its plane. Its been sitting in the (salt) water for a while and Im thinkiing the bottom is just filthy. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to iboats.

motor revs clean in neutral.

That really doesnt mean anything. Even a bad motor will rev in neutral.

in drive seems to not wanna rev past 3800, doesnt wanna get up on its plane

That could be a dirty bottom, or over proped, or an issue that needs addressed.
Pull it out and see what the bottom looks like, then do a compression check and see what you have.
The basics, points, plugs, cap, condensor, rotor, wires and so on are probablly needed.

Post the engine and drive info so we know what we are talking about.

One of those sbc volvo penta jobs. I own a few racecars and I can typically tell if theres an issue right away.. Beyond that is your guys gig haa. Got a little annoyed thinking about it tonight and went out there, think I may have found the issue (I hope) the damn hull is full of water! literally. Bad Bilge!
